What should you ideally eat before a workout? What should a pre-workout meal include and what functions should it serve? Find out the best ways!

Contrary to what you might think, a post-workout meal is more important than a pre-workout one. However, this doesn’t mean the pre-workout meal isn’t significant. It all depends on when you are training, what kind of training it is, and what you’ve already eaten that day. What’s the best thing to eat before a workout? Find out!


Workout on an empty stomach

If you plan to exercise on an empty stomach, you don’t need to eat anything before your workout, provided it’s done within 30-60 minutes of waking up (this is the general assumption). It’s also important to consider that in diets designed to limit eating to a few hours a day (feeding window), training can be done several hours before a meal. I prefer working out on an empty stomach, which doesn’t necessarily mean fasting. I advocate eating a light meal before a workout only if you feel hungry or if you’re working out later in the day and your dietary plan leaves room for two more meals before bedtime.

Light pre-workout meal

A pre-workout meal can be a fruit like an apple or a banana, or easily digestible carbohydrates like rice cakes with lean ham. The goal of this type of meal is to prevent hunger without causing a feeling of heaviness. I know people who prefer working out on a full stomach, and if they like it and feel good, they shouldn’t change this just because of general guidelines. It’s essential to remember that the most important meal of the day is after the workout, even if it’s the last meal of the day.


A pre-workout meal should give you energy, not take it away. As we know, after a large meal, it often feels impossible to move. During a workout, you need to be agile, fresh, and full of vitality. Listen to your body’s signals because it never lies. Often, we deceive ourselves by misinterpreting the signals our body sends, such as reaching for food when we’re actually dehydrated. When my brother was 3 years old, he suddenly preferred mandarins over chocolates. This indicated he needed something found in mandarins. When we turn off emotions and thoughts, we are left with the body’s physiological needs, and that’s what we should focus on. Remember this especially when, for the umpteenth time this week, you’re doing something contrary to what your body needs, guided only by your palate.
