Due to the progress of civilization and the changing conditions of everyday life, more and more people live in a great rush. Every day we are all exposed to many stressful situations, we always have no time for anything and often we do not make up to the set dates.
What is stress and what are its effects? And the most important – how to deal with stress?
Stress is a tough opponent, but you can overcome it. Check out ways to relieve stress!
What is stress?
Stress is a negative feeling that has always been with people. We can get stressed for any reason. The simplest stress is that of work, school and family. Each person is stressed out by something else. Some may be stressed by the mere presence at work or school, and others by the exams. The important thing, however, is how a person feels and reacts to stress.
What happens when we get stressed?
Stress affects our body, mind and breath. It works differently for each area and can cause different ailments.
At times of stress, our body produces cortisol (also known as the stress hormone). It is good for the body at certain times of the day (e.g. in the morning it makes us wake up) or in crisis moments (e.g. by providing us with additional energy in a dangerous situation).
In stressful situations, cortisol interacts with glucose, and its increased concentration in the blood is another stressful factor for our body.
Stress can cause an increase in muscle tension, shallower and faster breathing, and disturbance of mental functions.
After a longer life under constant stress, pro-inflammatory cytokines are released. And these are associated with many diseases, such as asthma, problems with the circulatory system, obesity, autoimmune diseases or chronic pain. It is a constant fight between the immune system and its cells. Diseases of this type are a great effort for the body. It is a struggle and an attempt to regenerate, which is often simply not possible.
What else can stress our body?
Harmful diet
It’s worth starting with a bad diet. What is a bad diet? For example, eating highly processed products or eating products that just do not serve us – the group of ingredients with which many people have a problem include, among others plants with a lot of lectins (pods), casein and gluten. In some people, such products have a negative effect on the intestines, irritating them and even damaging them.
Stress itself affects our intestines unsealing. When it comes to a bad diet, we only aggravate this condition. This way, food chemicals and toxins enter our bloodstream more easily. Contact with these toxins triggers the body’s defensive reactions, which is an additional stress for it.
How to solve it? Limit (or ideally eliminate) processed, junk food and ingredients that make you feel unwell. Sometimes, even what is considered healthy can hurt you. Do the food yourself – this way you know what is in it. Monitor yourself and find the best diet for you.
Contamination
Toxins surround us on all sides. Where are they located? In food, food packaging, cosmetics, polluted air, detergents. And it all has a significant impact on our body.
After some time, when the body reaches a certain level of toxin content and the body cannot cope with their excretion – they become stressors.
It is worth getting interested in this topic and trying to replace some of the products with natural ones. Instead of a body lotion containing a lot of chemicals, it is better to use coconut oil, and instead of artificial peeling, e.g. coffee grounds with olive oil, instead of shower gel – natural soap, even gray.
Any elimination of products containing carrageenans, SLS, parabens, talc, etc. is important. In small amounts, such ingredients are supposedly safe, but how much and how often do we use them? Natural products are a much better choice, and often cheaper as well.
Physical activity
Excessive, too intense activity and the lack of it are stress factors. You should watch your body and never overload yourself. If after exercise, instead of a surge of energy, you feel a decrease in energy, it is a sign that you may be doing something wrong or a given type of physical activity is not suitable for you. Choose the types of activities that make you happy and serve your body.
No sleep
For the body, lack of sleep is a tragedy. If we do not live according to the circadian rhythm, our body becomes very disturbed and therefore experiences enormous stress.
You should train your body to fall asleep (preferably before midnight) and sleep at least 7 hours.
Give your body a chance to regenerate. This way it will rest and regulate all processes. Thanks to this, you will feel a lot of energy during the day, and all the processes taking place in the body will run properly. Valuable sleep is essential.
How can I deal with stress?
At the beginning, it is important to consider what stresses us. If we know the answer, the best advice is to eliminate it from life.
For example: if you surround yourself with toxic people (family, friends or relationship), talk to them about it, explain what you don’t like and what is killing you. If that doesn’t help, distance yourself from such people.
We know it doesn’t sound simple, but the relief you will get from eliminating toxic people from your life is enormous.
It’s not worth wasting your life on people who don’t deserve it – and worse, just destroy them.
Remember that „you are the average of the 5 people with whom you spend the most time.” Therefore, choose your closest company very wisely.
And if your job is very stressful, change it. It is not worth exhausting yourself mentally. Everything we do in life should be done with joy and satisfaction. Our work does not have to be the most ambitious occupation in the world – not everyone has such a need, but it should be pleasant for us and most importantly in the company of people who do not tire us in any way.
The same is true if you don’t have time for anything – think about what you can give up (e.g. watching TV or sitting in front of a computer). There is always some way to better organize your day – 24 hours is a lot of time.
What is helpful in reducing stress that occurs, for example, during exams, job interviews, etc.? Everyone has to find their own way, but our favorite ones are a moment of relaxation with our favorite music (in our case classical and jazz), aromatherapy, a conversation with a loved one or breathing techniques. It is worth looking for and trying different ways, because the ability to deal with stress is invaluable for our health.
If you want to live life to the full and, above all, healthy, you need to take care of your body. Eliminating the main stressors in your life, taking care of your diet and physical activity, and getting enough sleep are the basics that you should focus on.
We have to take care of the psyche and body in an equal way. In addition, stress (elevated cortisol) is often the reason why our weight does not decrease despite following a reduction diet. How to deal with this? You should focus on regeneration, rest and most importantly find your own ways to eliminate stress from your life. Stress is the greatest enemy of our health and figure.
